family home evening

Family Home Evening – it’s the perfect opportunity to spend some time together as a family. Whether you’re doing something fun at home or you’re getting out for a little adventure, dedicating time to doing something together is going to make a big difference with your family.

However, it can be challenging trying to plan a time that works for everyone, or finding an activity that everyone can enjoy. Take a look at our top five go-to Family Home Evening Ideas and get ready to plan your next evening together as a family!

1. Temple Fort Building

Who doesn’t love a little fort-building session? Gather together all of the pillows, cushions, and blankets that you can find and make the ultimate blanket fort. Use couches, tables, and chairs to serve as the foundation of your blanket fort. Once you have it all put together, bring in some lights and get comfortable together.

This is a great opportunity to talk about temples. Explain how hard the early members of the church had to work to build temples. Share your testimony of temple ordinances and the difference that it makes in your life.

2. Pioneer Heritage Lesson

If you have pioneer heritage, create a Family Home Evening lesson around it. Pull out everything you have about your ancestors. Whether it’s photos, journals, accounts of their lives and experiences, bring it all out of storage and teach your children about the hard work and sacrifice that was made. You could even grab some pioneer art from Latter-Day Home to contribute to the lesson!

3. Family Art Project

If you have some art enthusiasts in the family, consider some art projects that you can work on as a family! You could do a family collage and frame it to hang in the hallway, or perhaps you could work on a family calendar together. Have each member of the family take on the art for two or three months and see what everyone comes up with.

This is a great place to keep track of any birthdays, anniversaries, or other special events and occasions going on in the family.

4. Bake a Yummy Treat

Baking something delicious together literally never gets old. It could be that classic, go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe. It could be something brand new that you’ve been wanting to try out. Whatever it is, gather the ingredients, turn on some good music, and get to baking together.

Consider how you can involve the younger kids! You might be surprised at what they can do to contribute. You could measure out the dry ingredients and let them dump it in the bowl. Give them a turn mixing before you finish it up. And then, of course, let them lick the spoon.

5. Take a Hike

Sometimes you just need to get out of the house and get some fresh air, so why not use this as inspiration for your next Family Home Evening activity? Do some research to see what hiking trails are nearby that would work for your kids and head out for a little adventure. Consider playing I Spy while you’re out, or do a little hiking scavenger hunt to keep your kids engaged.

We get it! You want your Family Home Evening to be fun for every member of your family. Plan out an evening that everyone will enjoy and get ready to make some meaningful family memories.
